The Breeze Band Members

Barney Norfleet

Barney is currently in his 3rd time around with The Breeze Band. “I guess there’s just something about this band that keeps people coming back....myself included” says Norfleet. Born and raised in Wilson County, Barney joined The Breeze Band in the early 80’s as a young college student. After a few of years, big city life was calling so he packed up for Charlotte and joined The Fabulous Kays. After a couple of years of city life it was time to wise up and come back home, and was lucky enough for Dink Perry to offer his old job back. He continued with the band 8 more years until Dink moved the band to Charlotte.

In his years in the business, Barney has performed with such music greats as The Temptations, The 4 Tops, The Spinners, Dionne Warwick, and Paul Anka just to name a few. He has performed along side some of the biggest groups in the Southeast at some of the largest venues there is.

Barney is a former local music teacher and currently works for the State of NC. Along with wife Karen, they enjoy traveling, concerts, and sporting events, and is a huge supporter of his Alma Mater: The Barton College Bulldogs.

Gordon Spring

Starting out singing in grammar school, Gordon certainly got an early start in the music business. In the 8th grade with a band called the Telstars, Gordon was “gigging” long before he was driving. “Looking back” says Spring, “it seemed natural, but I guess it was unusual for a group so young to be working like that.” Perhaps that early start laid the foundation for the golden voice we hear today. When The Breeze Band first formed on July 4, 1980, it was with Gordon at the helm guiding the ship. It was unfortunate that after 2 1/2 years, due to his work schedule, Spring was unable to continue with the band.

Now that the band that made Dink Perry a legend has decided to transform the band into a newer and better version 2.0, there is only one person for the lead singer spot. Gordon is a natural fit with his history with the band and his crystal clean, yet powerful tenor voice.

Gordon works in the food service industry and lives in Rocky Mount with wife Janet. Together they enjoy camping and riding their motorcycles. Gordon is also a karaoke celebrity in the Nash and Edgecombe county areas.

Ronnie Raper

Ronnie, a native of Wilson, has been playing guitar since 6th grade. He loves and plays all styles of music ranging from hard rock to contemporary Christian. If asked what his favorite type of music is, Ronnie always replies “any kind that has a great guitar part in it”. He began performing in high school with a consistent group of fellow students primarily in the annual Fike Stunt Night from ‘83 – ‘86. After college at ASU and beginning a career as a CPA Ronnie joined “Covenant”, a contemporary Christian music group consisting of other musician friends. The group had moderate success, recording two albums.

After settling down with a family, Ronnie got involved with the two theater groups in Wilson: “The Playhouse of Wilson” and “Act for Youth”. He was most often playing guitar or bass for shows these groups performed on the Boykin Center stage. Occasionally, Ronnie was actually an actor on the stage. His favorite shows to have played were “Footloose”, “Grease”, “Schoolhouse Rock 2” and most recently, “Jesus Christ Superstar”.

Joining The Breeze Band, Ronnie brings his own style of playing that is a blend of several musical styles and genres. His style has helped define the sound of the newest version of the band. Ronnie currently resides in Wilson with his wife, Colleen, and their two children. He enjoys cycling when not working or playing music.
